Custom Polymer Compounding

Align resin, additives and process with a defined performance target.

When is this service needed?

Custom compounding is the answer when the commercial grades available do not give the right balance of properties, color or cost for your application. By combining a base polymer with fillers, reinforcing fibers, additives and pigments, a compound is designed to reach the target stiffness, impact strength, heat and UV stability, flame retardancy or appearance, while running consistently in your production process.

Types of compounds we develop

Glass- or carbon-fiber-reinforced compounds, talc- and calcium-carbonate-filled compounds, impact-modified compounds, flame-retardant compounds, UV- and heat-stabilized compounds, conductive and antistatic compounds, polymer blends and compounds containing recycled material, based on polyolefins, polyamide, PBT, ABS, polycarbonate and other thermoplastics.

Compounding process and quality control

Compounds are usually produced on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Feeding sequence, temperature profile, screw speed and the layout of mixing elements all affect filler dispersion, fiber length and polymer degradation. Each batch is checked for melt flow rate (ASTM D1238), filler and ash content by TGA, tensile and impact properties and, where needed, color measurement and microscopic examination of dispersion.

Information needed

State the base polymer, reinforcement or filler requirements, appearance, processing method and expected volume. Trial and production feasibility must be confirmed.

Next step and expected outcome

Once the requirement is reviewed, an initial formulation is compounded at laboratory scale, molded into test specimens and tested against agreed acceptance criteria. After the samples are approved, a pilot-scale trial is run, followed by production with a technical data sheet and a batch quality-control plan.
